Session: Lamu Branch Volunteers

At the I.O.Me005 Lab, we had a session with members where we explored and discussed real community challenges and proposed innovative ideas to continue improving lives in Lamu. They shared solutions like Elderly Support Systems, Improved Farming Methods, Ambulance Boats, Methadone Treatment Programs, and Desalination Plants for safe and clean water. Others proposed making of fuel from plastic waste, reforesting mangroves to preserve ecosystem, and establishment of policy frameworks to reduce early marriages. Each idea began with a pain point and grew into a solution showing how creativity, invention, and innovation can build a stronger, more sustainable Lamu.

Unveiling Flood Detector – Type 2!

Sit tight, we have news for you! Mercy and Felix, members from the I.O.Me001 FabLab, have created a new flood detector, something that works a little different as compared to the first one. The first flood detector worked by detecting when waterbodies were about to break their banks, whereas this new version has sensors around an area to monitor flash floods during the rainy season. How it works is that sensors will communicate with each other during floods, and if they register the same/similar data they will send out alerts. This is helpful, as this will be able to differentiate between a flash flood and when someone pours a bucket of water on the ground. This new version of the flood detector is more portable as it works using lithium-ion batteries and GSM network vs. the older floor detector that works using solar power and LTE network. The motivation behind this new model came from the flash-floods in Kijabe in 2024. There was wide-spread devastation where families were wiped out and people had to start their lives again from scratch. All of that could have been prevented by an alert system.

Blue Economy Innovation & Investment Summit 2025

I.O.Me254 was present and heard during the 2025 Blue Economy & Investment Summit, held at Pride Inn Paradise. Present was Derrick Mugasia – I.O.Me254 Labs Coordinator for the Kenya Red Cross Society and Nadhifa Jama – Entrepreneurship Co-ordinator for Kenya Red Cross Society. The agenda included discussions on sustainable solutions for ocean pollution, marine biodiversity, and community empowerment. This was reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship as I.O.Me254, and as the Kenya Red Cross Society as a whole.

Plastic Odyssey Visit

The MV Plastic Odyssey is a ship that left Marseille on October 1st 2022 for a world-wide voyage to places most affected by plastic pollution. We hosted them at I.O.Me254’s Mombasa Branch (I.O.Me001 Social Innovation Center) for a period of 2 weeks, whereby we had an exhibition depicting their travels in the co-working space. We had children steaming in from Mbaraki Girls School as well as the Aga Khan Primary School, brimming with curiosity and creativity. For the children, it was a meaningful learning experience where they saw more practical approaches of environment preservation by recycling and repurposing the materials that we would otherwise have disposed of. We had the opportunity to have our staff, together with 10 waste management companies, attend an onboard incubation training on plastic recycling onboard the Plastic Odyssey. They then ended their stay in Mombasa with I.O.Me254’s partnership launch event that was held at the I.O.Me001 Social Innovation Center. This event was crucial as it market the day that Plastic Odyssey signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kenya Red Cross Society.

Men’s Mental Health Talk

In September, I.O.Me254’s branch in Lamu (I.O.Me005) in partnership with the Rehabilitation Center hosted a Men’s Mental Health Talk. The focus was on financial freedom: how men can achieve it, secure it, and avoid misusing it. In our generation, financial pressures have become one of the biggest causes of mental anguish among men, leading to stress, depression, and sadly even suicide. We discussed the importance of financial discipline, saving, investing, and avoiding unnecessary debt, whilst also reminding ourselves that true freedom is not about competition or showing-off, but about peace of mind and stability. A strong message was shared: a man’s worth is not defined by his wallet, but by his health, resilience and integrity.

Training Session: Ideation, Prototyping, Manufacturing

We had a training session led by one of our lab members, Brayton Anderson, on Ideation, Prototyping, and Manufacturing. We explored how to research effectively, prototype rapidly, and navigate regulatory landscapes (KEBS, patents, and compliance).   Tips include: When in the stage of ideation, you need to do a lot of research, and you need to be intentional about what you are researching on. Additionally, what helps whilst researching is to think through the lens of the end-user instead of the builder When it comes to manufacturing, think of which manufacturers to use at which stages Also think about what the existing regulations are, together with what the regulating bodies are for compliance Then also remember how the regulations and compliance differs with the different country markets (e.g the European market and the American market) Also think about the different forms of testing, especially when it comes to electronics.

FabKids: Climate Conversations

Our 3-Day holiday workshop kicked off with a splash! The young scientists dived into the water cycle; evaporation, condensation, rain and collection through stories, discussions, and fun DIY experiments. The kids discovered how water keeps our world alive and how the Earth itself works as a natural filter, recycling water so its clean and ready for life. What makes this FabKids training different from the last ones is that this one is centred around climate conversations. The theme of this training is: innovating water access for a climate-resilient future. This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goals: 13 (take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) 14 (conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development).

3-Day Teachers’ Trainings

It is important to up-skill the youth, however it is also equally important to up-skill the teachers that bring up and influence the younger generations. We started out with showing the teachers what the aims and initiatives of the Kenya Red Cross Society and, by extension, I.O.Me254 are all about. We then went on to cover essential computer skills like operating Microsoft Suite together with learning how to manage files. Towards the end of the training, the teachers had mastered the practical skills necessary to take their use of digital skills to the next level.

Policy Dialogue: British Council X Nairobits Trust

At the Policy Dialogue Event, held collaboratively by the SIDP (Skills for Inclusive Digital Participation) Project (via British Council) and Nairobits Trust, I.O.Me254 joined leaders from across different sectors in Mombasa. The Skills for Inclusive Digital Participation works on giving digitally excluded individuals the opportunity to build their skills so as to access digital opportunities. These digitally excluded individuals include women, the youth, differently-abled individuals as well as underprivileged individuals. The event encompassed discussions on. how to turn digital literacy into real, inclusive impact in Mombasa, based on the project implemented earlier this year by the British Council and Nairobits Trust in conjunction with I.O.Me254, A.P.D.K, Government of Kenya and other key stakeholders. We ended the day with a clearer way forward into the next year, with more potentially-impactful implementation tactics.   Lets all play our part and help turn digital skills into sustainable livelihoods, especially for the youth, women, and persons with disabilities.

Lot 17 – Digital Literacy Trainings

In July we had the privilege of hosting Lot 17 of the Digital Literacy Training. We’re equipping young minds with essential skills that open doors to opportunity in today’s digital-first world. This is part of a broader mission by I.O.Me254 to bridge the digital divide, especially in underserved regions.   Every click, every lesson, every step forward is a contribution toward self-reliance, employability, and innovation. Learning how to format documents professionally and navigating advanced features like the View and Review tabs are two examples of the practical knowledge that employers demand and communities need.
